A tear slipped down Noahâs cheek, and he didnât bother to wipe it away. He tried to blame the exhaustion from traveling or the secrets Melanie confided in him.
But that would be a lie.
âAre you crying?â Melanie leaned over the still-sleeping Stella to wipe a tear from his cheek. Her lips pressed together like she was suppressing a laugh.
âNo.â
She held up her damp thumb. âProof. Wonder what the media would think of this.â She held her fist to her mouth like a microphone. âRocker Noah Clarke bawls like a baby as Anna and Elsa save the day.â
He batted her hand down. âIâm not bawling like a baby, but theyâre the only family each other has, and they love each other so much.â
âPersonally, I was hoping for some mega smooching with Kristoff.â
âOf course you were, perv.â He shot her a grin.
âMelanie Ann Snyder!â The familiar voice came from the doorway, and Noah closed his eyes. This couldnât be happening.
âDad.â Melanie jumped from the bed, her face reddening. âI wasnât expecting you until dinner.â
Mr. Snyderâs hard eyes roamed from Noah to Melanie. âI had a last-minute meeting scheduled for tonight, so I decided to come see if you wanted to go out to lunch instead.â
Noah had known the head of the label for just as long as heâd known Melanie, but there was a harshness heâd never connected with. It was no secret in their offices that the old man didnât approve of Noahâs antics and had considered dropping him for years to clean up the labelâs image.
In all the time heâd known him, Noah didnât know if heâd ever seen the man smile.
âDad.â Melanie stepped closer to her dad, and the man seemed to relax. âWe were just watching a movie. Stella was asking for me andââ
âWhy was she asking for you?â
âWell, we spent a lot of time together in France, andââ
âYouâre not her mother, Mel. And you told me this marriage wasnât real.â
âItâs not. I didnât lie to you.â
He grunted. âWell, get ready. Weâre going to lunch. Noah can head home.â He still hadnât met his eyes.
Melanie placed a hand on Noahâs arm before realizing she shouldnât do that and withdrawing it. âIâll wake Stella up and get dressed. Will you two kill each other if I send you both out to wait in the living room?â
âPlease, Melanie,â her dad scoffed. âGive me more credit than that. Iâll only maim him.â
For a moment, Noah wondered if Mr. Snyder was kidding. He said it with such coldness, no laughter in his voice.
Melanie gave them both an uneasy smile. âIâll be out in a minute.â
Mr. Snyder cut Noah a harsh glare until Noah turned and left the room. He closed the door behind him and stood in front of it like he feared Noah would try to break through while his daughter changed.
Noah sighed and sat on the couch, resting his forearms on his knees. âSirââ
Mr. Snyder snapped his eyes to Noah. âWhat are you doing, boy?â
Noah couldnât remember the last time anyone called him boyâother than Nanâor did it with such disdain.
